What do the Different Lightsaber Colors Mean in Star Wars?

Who can forget the moment Samuel L. Jackson’s portrayal of Jedi Master Mace Windu whipped out a purple lightsaber in Episode II? The minds of fans worldwide suddenly erupted in delight when a brand new color was introduced to cannon. Or what about when the tri-blade of Kylo Ren’s red lightsaber made us all sit up and pay attention?

For the diehard fans of the Star Wars universe, different lightsaber colors are part of the structure Lucas and others have created during world-building. For those who may have only seen the films, every single lightsaber color has a significant meaning relevant to the user.

Where do Lightsaber Colors Come From?

Color originates from the Kyber crystal used at the core of the lightsaber. These rare crystals determine the overall color when the fighter holding the weapon's personality, fighting style, and moral choices are blended together. The only exception is red crystals. These are synthetic. That is why you see so many Sith with red-colored lightsabers. All the other crystals are found in nature.

What about the rest? Let’s break down the different colors of lightsabers.

1 - Blue Lightsaber

This is probably the most popular color for kids hoping to dress up as their favorite Jedi during Halloween. A lot of primary characters in Star Wars use a blue lightsaber, including Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, Luke Skywalker, and Rey (although that is Luke’s). This color represents trust, calm, loyalty, and more natural elements like the sky or ocean.

2 - Green Lightsaber

Yes! The color of Yoda, Qui-Gon Jinn, and Luke Skywalker. Essentially this is a favorite of Jedi Masters and represents growth, nature, and safety.

3 - Dark Lightsaber

This symbolizes darkness and mysterious power that are extremely rare in Star Wars. Most recently, you may have seen the Darksaber wielded in the Mandalorian series with a black blade. There are one or two more, but those exist in the books and video games.

4 - Purple Lightsaber

Everyone say hello to Mace Windu, one of the coolest Jedi Masters ever! Other wielders included Vernestra Rwoh and Ty Yorrick. In Star Wars Legends, both Anakin Solo and Jaina Solo have violet lightsabers. This represents royalty, power, ambition, wisdom, and nobility.

5 - Red Lightsaber

This is a favorite color of the Sith because it is made using a synthetic Kyber crystal. Like most things on the Dark Side, this is forcing an object to do your bidding instead of letting the natural beauty shine through. Many Sith use a crimson lightsaber and even a few Jedi Council members. Darth Vader, Darth Maul, Kylo Ren, and Darth Sidious are the most famous. The color represents anger, passion, power, fire, love, and any other extreme emotions that can fuel your rage.

6 - White Lightsaber

This is one of the rare colors because it is technically achromatic. That means it does not have a color. This represents those fighters that prefer a more neutral path with positivity, purity and new beginnings on the horizon. The two well-known wielders are Ahsoka Tano and Orla Jareni.

7 - Orange Lightsaber

Yes, Cal uses this in the video games, but the color also appears in Star Wars Legends with members of the Mandalorian Knights, the Jedi Master Yaddle, and the Sith Lord Tulak Hord all utilizing purple lightsabers. It is meant to represent energy, fire, warmth, and sunshine.

8 - Yellow Lightsaber

Yellow-colored lightsabers represent a change in personality or identity as well as energy, optimism, warmth, caution, and sunshine. That is why they are also pretty rare and the color of Rey when she takes on the Skywalker name. Other wielders include the Jedi Temple Guard, Ventress, Tyvokka, and the Dark Jedi Yun.

9 - Cyan Lightsaber

This is a lesser-known color that is a little outside the current canon. The only known use is in Star Wars Jedi's game: Fallen Order from the character Cal Kestis who uses a double-sided lightsaber like Darth Maul. This is a mixture of blue and green lightsabers for symbolism.

10 - Indigo Lightsaber

Another of the rare colors that is not quite blue or purple and only found in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order with our friend Cal Kestis again. This is supposed to be a spiritual and intuitive color.

11 - Magenta Lightsaber

You guessed it, one more for good old Cal in the video games. This one represents charm, harmony, femininity, and compassion.
