Fall of the Empire, Star Wars, Sith

Probably one of the primary storylines to weave its way through the entire Star Wars universe and canon is the rise and fall of the Empire. Remember, the Empire came to power because the Supreme Chancellor Palpatine controlled the strings in the background. He was disappointed in the lack of recognition of the Sith. Eventually, He created a plan to destroy them using Anakin Skywalker as bait.

While this worked to destroy the Old Republic, it also fueled the story behind the original trilogy. Here is the welcome plotline of Luke Skywalker learning to wield a lightsaber as he is taught by legendary Jedi Masters like Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda until finally facing off against his father, Darth Vader, eventually convincing him to turn on his own master.

That confrontation led to the downfall of the Emperor in Return of the Jedi while Han, Leia, Lando, and the rest destroyed the Empire’s base at Endor so no other Death Stars could be built and put into service. With Palpatine dead, Death Star construction ended, and the Empire in tatters, the universe was saved, and we were treated to the ghost images of the Jedi masters and the birth of the New Republic.

Enter the New Disney Plus Series

This moment in time, when the Empire is perceived to be destroyed, is fertile ground for Disney writers. Here we see The Mandolorian and The Book of Boba Fett taking place in what is proving to be some of the most popular Star Wars canon to exist, even outranking many of the Skywalker Saga films (cough, cough, here’s looking at you prequels).

This was when there were numerous skirmishes as the Rebel Alliance went about destroying any small remnants of the Empire so it could not be reborn. But here is where it gets interesting. Eventually, we are treated to the latest trilogy that starts on Jakku, where the location of the Empire’s last stand appears to have taken place.

You can actually see this transition in Episode Four of The Mandolorian, where Cara Dune, a Rebel Shock Trooper, asserts that she wanted to stay on Endor because she was tired of protecting politicians and dignitaries instead of unearthing Empire scum.

From Empire to First Order

While everyone is busy watching the battle between the First Order and the Rebel Alliance, a new faction of Sith cultists known as the Sith Eternal is slowly rebuilding power. Who should be in charge of this faction but the once defeated Palpatine. Again we are treated to an epic battle with Force lightening and lightsabers flying as Rey sends Palpatine back to the beyond in The Last Jedi

This is a wildly debated plot point because it mirrors so much of the original trilogy but again leaves fertile ground for what could happen next. For all purposes right now, the Empire is once and for all truly defeated.

Where Do We Go Next?

Rogue Squadron

(ref: D23 Expo)

The future of red lightsaber touting baddies is still to be decided. There are a number of new films being discussed and in various stages of development. These include:

  • Star Wars Rogue Squadron Trilogy directed by Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman 1984)
  • Unnamed Star Wars Film by Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit, Thor Ragnarok)
  • Unnamed Star Wars Trilogy in a different part of the galaxy by Rian Johnson (The Last Jedi)

There are also unknown Star Wars movies by Marvel’s Kevin Feige, J.D Dillard, and plenty of other series based on the new interest and success of our friend Mando.

Who knows what could happen in any of this new material. The hope right now is to pay close attention to the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney Plus series due to launch on May 27, 2022. Hopefully, there will be some Easter eggs as to what to expect next. All we can say is don’t count a dead Sith dead quite yet. We could see something completely new soon.
