Biography
Kylo Ren was born Ben Solo to parents Han Solo and Leia Skywalker Organa Solo on the planet Chandrila. From a young age he was very powerful with the force so his parents sent him off to train at Luke Skywalker’s Jedi Academy. As an apprentice under Skywalker, Solo rapidly developed his talents, proving the strength inherent of his bloodline, and quickly became the strongest and most promising fledgling Jedi amongst the new Jedi Order's ranks. His training was going well until Luke Skywalker had a vision of Ben turning to the darkside. He attacked but Ben woke up just in time to save himself. In a blind rage he destroyed the Jedi Academy and officially became the Sith Lord Kylo Ren.
Ren’s main goal was to continue Vadar’s legacy and destroy any remnants of the Jedi. Along with his master, Snoke, Ren formed the First Order, built from the remnants of the Empire the First Order was determined to squash the New Republic in all its glory.
Though Ren’s job was to fight for the first order, his real motivation was destroying all the Jedi. He sought out Lor San Tekka, a galactic scout rumored to know Luke Skywalker’s location. When Ren found Tekka on Jakku he killed him, but not before Tekka had the chance to give a piece of the star map to the Resistance pilot Poe Dameron. Kylo Ren then went on a mission to capture Poe, however when he eventually got him he learned that map was now in the memory banks of BB-8, an astromech on Jakku. Ren went to head back to Jakku however not before receiving a warning from Snoke that there was an awakening in the force and that his apprentice would face a trial when he eventually faced his father. Though he swore his allegiance to Snoke, Kylo was intrigued by the girl Rey that he captured on Jakku. Her force abilities were raw and powerful and her and Ren seemed to have a mysterious connection. ‘
Kylo eventually faced his father, Han Solo, on a Starkiller base, killing him on sight. Though he thought this act would bring him peace, cutting off all ties he had to the light side of the force, instead it only strengthened the conflict inside him. In his weakened state, Rey was able to best Ren in a lightsaber duel, sparing his life.
After his failure, Snoke deemed Ren as weak and too sentimental. He sent Ren on another mission as a test. He was to destroy Leia Organa’s Resistance flagship, however when the time came, he found himself unable to fire on his mother.
While this was happening, Ren’s connection to Rey was growing ever stronger. She was off on Ahch-To, training with Luke Skywalker, however agreed to leave her training and join Kylo on his ship. Snoke had wanted this and captured Rey, ordering Kylo to kill Rey, destroying all his attachments. Instead of killing Rey, he activated Luke’s lightsaber with the Force and struck down his Snoke instead. However, this did not gain Rey’s loyalty. She refused to join him and fled his ship. With Snoke dead, Ren was now the new Supreme Leader of the First Order.
Kylo then led the attack on the Resistance’s hideout on Crait. There he confronted Luke Skywalker. Kylo ran Luke through with his blade, only to discover he’d been fooled into fighting a Force projection as a distraction as the resistance escaped.
When Emperor Palpatine returned, Ren’s place as Supreme Leader was threatened. Palpatine revealed that he had created Snoke and manipulated Kylo for his entire life. He offered Kylo domination over the galaxy if he killed Rey. Kylo and Rey's connection was stronger than ever. He asked her to join him in destroying Palpatine but she refused.
Kylo confronted Rey on the Death Star ruins on Kef Bir, but was distracted by his mother reaching out to him through the Force. While he was distracted, Rey stabbed Kylo with his own lightsaber, but then healed him with the Force and left him stranded on Kef Bir. Kylo then had a vision of Han, who told his son he loved him. Kylo hurled his Sith lightsaber into the sea, becoming Ben Solo again.
Ben hurried to Exegol and fought Palpatine alongside Rey. Rey destroyed the Sith Lord, but the effort killed. Making a sacrifice mirroring that of Anakin Skywalker, the man he had always sought to become, Ben gave his life to heal her. Redeemed by this selfless act, he then passed into the Force.
His Lightsaber
Ben Solo constructed his lightsaber while training as a Jedi Padawan under his uncle, and Jedi Master, Luke Skywalker. His original lightsaber was a light blue. When he turned to the darkside he used the same hilt and kyber crystal to create his sith saber. He used the dark side to bleed the crystal but it cracked while he was doing this becoming very unstable and a red yellow color. In order to channel the dangerous amounts of power coming through the broken crystal, he added vents on either side to divert the excess heat and produce Quillion blades
Lightsaber Form
There is no official canon lightsaber form that Kylo Ren used. From analyzing his movements fans speculate that he uses some combination of forms 5 and 6. Due to the fact that he studied under Luke Skywalker, who used form 5, Ren’s basics are very obviously form 5, however he uses the form 6 moves that involve pushing or pulling opponents away with the force.
