Biography:

The origins of Darth Maul are mostly unknown, but it is known that he comes from Dathomir. He trained as a Sith Lord under Darth Sidious and longed for the destruction of the Jedi. His master kept him in hiding for much of his life until he eventually unleashed him to assassinate Queen Amadala on the outer rim planet of Tatooine. He battled briefly with Jedi Qui-Gon Jinn, who was placed in charge of protecting the queen, but could not reach his target. Later, he waited for Queen Amadala on her home planet, Naboo. There he dueled with Qui-Gon and his apprentice, Obi-Wan Kenobi. He fought with blinding speed and ferocity. He managed to kill Qui Gon however he was bested by Obi Wan, getting sliced in half and falling to his death.

That was thought to be the end of Darth Maul; however he survived, but his mental state was shattered. He was unable to form coherent sentences and couldn’t remember anything except for his hatred of Obi Wan. He built himself spider like prosthetic legs and survived off eating vermin in the sewers of the planet Lotho Minor.

Maul was eventually rescued by his brother Savage Opress who brought him back to his homeworld of Dathomir to be healed. There the Nightsister Mother Talzin used dark magicks to restore the fallen Sith’s mind and body. Once healed, he took Opress on as his apprentice and began wreaking havoc on the galaxy in an attempt to get the attention of Obi Wan.

He dueled Obi-Wan Kenobi on numerous occasions, proving himself to still be a formidable opponent. He killed Obi-Wan’s former love as a way to get revenge, Duchess Satine Kryze. However, this act created a dark side ripple which was sensed by his former Master, Darth Sidious. The Sith Master killed Savage Opress and took Maul captive. However, Maul was eventually able to escape captivity.

Once freed, Maul began orchestrating the siege of Mandalore. He wanted to draw in Obi Wan and Anakin Skywalker and kill them both, finally slaying his arch nemesis and depriving Darth Sidious of his new apprentice. When he was instead confronted by the ex-Jedi Ahsoka Tano he offered to make an allegiance with her. However she declined, turning his own weapon against him and taking him captive. While he was on route to trial on Coruscant, order 66 was executed. Ahsoka chose to free Maul as a diversion so that she could save Rex. Left to his own devices, Maul used the force to rip the hyperdrive in half, sending the ship hurtling towards a nearby moon. He escaped using the pod that Ahsoka had planned to escape in, leaving her to fend for herself.

During the reign of the Empire, Maul built up the Crimson Dawn crime syndicate. Working from his homeworld of Dathomir, Maul commanded the crime syndicate with the help of the figurehead Dryden Vos, who traveled the galaxy on his yacht performing the will of his master. After his death, Dryden’s first lieutenant Qi’ra took control, working closely with Maul to continue their rule.

Later, Maul somehow got stranded on the planet of Malachor. However, he was rescued by young Jedi Ezra Bridger. Together they climbed the Sith temple situated on the planet and obtained a Sith Holocron. However, Maul had hidden his true intentions from the boy. The temple was actually a battle station that he wanted to use to take revenge on his enemies. However, he was not successful and was forced to flee the planet on an inquisitor ship, but only after blinding Ezra’s master, Kanan Jarus.

Maul was not done with Ezra yet. He tracked him to his ship, the Ghost. There he took the crew hostage and forced Ezra to unlock and combine his Jedi Holocron with Maul’s Sith one from Malachor, to obtain ultimate knowledge. Both saw visions during this rite. Following it, Maul fled to his ship, muttering “he lives!” with delirious enthusiasm. As a result of the ritual Maul and Bridger were psychically linked. Ezra continued having visions of Maul and almost killed a pilot because of them. Eventually, Maul sought out Ezra and brought him to his homeworld of Dathomir where Nightsister magick gifted them the knowledge that Obi-Wan Kenobi was alive, and he was on Tatooine.

Maul immediately traveled to Tatooine in an attempt to exact his revenge, however after aimlessly wandering through the sandy land he realized he needed a new approach. He tricked Ezra into going to Tatooine and used him as bait to lure out Obi Wan. This worked and Maul and Obi Wan had an epic duel (which you can read all about here). Maul was eventually bested and died in Kenobi’s arms.

His Lightsaber:

Maul sports an iconic double bladed red saber, making him stand out from many other sith lords. He, unlike most people, has two kyber crystals, both used in his saber. During his lifetime, Maul also wielded the Darksaber while he was ruler of Mandalore.

Lightsaber Form:

Maul uses form 7, also known as Juyo, the Way of the Vornskr, or the Ferocity Form. It’s the last canon form of lightsaber combat invented by the jedi. It’s considered the most intense form of lightsaber combat and involves a lot of internal focus. It was restricted for use among jedi due to the amount of emotional strain it places on the user. It was believed that this form would turn jedi to the dark side. While there are some maneuvers specific to form 7 what really makes it unique is the fact that all the moves the user does are very combat driven. If the duelist is not allowing the combat to influence their moves they are using this style wrong.
