What the Skeleton Crew Trailer Tells us about the New Show and What to Expect Come December
The new Star Wars show, Skeleton Crew, is set to be released this December. Recently, the Skeleton Crew trailer was revealed. Today we will be looking at that trailer, what it tells us, and how this show will tie into the larger Star Wars universe.
Skeleton Crew follows a group of children who discover something shocking about their home planet and get themselves lost in the stars. Throughout the show they have to work to find their way back home, making allies and enemies and discovering brand new worlds along the way. The show takes place during the New Republic era, the same time as the Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and Boba Fett, however it’s still unclear whether this show is officially part of the mandoverse.
The children’s homeplanet is the most Earth-like planet we’ve ever seen in the Star Wars universe. This aligns with what the creatives have been saying about the show taking inspiration from The Goonies and E.T. In the trailer we see places that look a lot like the traditional American suburbia, with a Star Wars spin of course.
The trailer also offers the first look at Jude Law as Skeleton Crew's unnamed Jedi character. He levitates the keys to his prison cell and frees himself before removing his hood and smirking at the children. It’s also implied that the place that the children discover on their planet is an old Jedi Temple, so perhaps these children have a closer tie to the light side of the force than we thought.
One of the biggest moments in the trailer shows a werewolf-like alien called a Shistavanen firing on our ragtag gang of kids. Shistavanens are nothing new to the Star Wars universe. They’re quite prevalent in the comics and we even see one in the background of the Mos Eisley cantina scenes in A New Hope.
Finally, the biggest reveal of the Skeleton Crew trailer is the return of Marti Matulis’ Vane. Vane is a pirate who crossed paths with Din Djarin in The Mandalorian season 3. He appears to be the main antagonist of the Skeleton Crew, however this raises some questions. Has Vane taken over for pirate king Gorian Shard who died at the end of The Mandalorian? Is he sailing under a new Pirate King yet to be revealed?
While the trailer answered some questions, it gave us many more. Chances are, we probably won’t get these questions answered until Skeleton Crew’s release. You can stream the first two episodes on Disney+ on December 3rd, 2024.
