Unleashing the Latest Star Wars Disney Plus Series: Andor!
It is strange to consider that 16 years passed between the release of Episode VI and Episode I of the Star Wars films. Now, we are treated to an almost endless supply of fascinating new storylines, incredible characters, and new worlds fans in the 70s and 80s would have drooled to experience.
The latest incarnation of Star Wars is set to release on September 21, 2022, with the first three episodes of Andor coming to Disney Plus. The streaming service will feature a brand new deep dive into a Rogue One spinoff centered on the character of Cassian Andor.
The point of this new series is to examine the galaxy from the perspective of the growing rebellion against the Sith-controlled Empire. Disney is billing it as part intense thriller and part political intrigue as we see where alliances fall and how the main character transforms from a self-serving nihilist into a selfless martyr.
The story is set roughly five years before the events of Rogue One. It will involve flashbacks to Cassian’s earlier life to better explain how he feels about the Empire. We may see some political undertones as part of this story relates to the journey of a refugee and migrant trying to find a new place that is safe and secure after persecution. However, don’t expect Disney to get too heavy-handed as that theme has always been present in the Star Wars world, no matter the era of real life.
Building a Rebellion - Building an Empire
As die-hard Star Wars fans, what is probably going to be most intriguing is the exploration of how both the rebellion and the Empire became more solidified in their footholds. This series promises to take us through the corporate planets, supply chains, and hidey holds of rebellion culture. Of course, that means there are likely to be many Easter eggs hidden about.
As of late, Disney has done quite well with the rags to riches story of its anti-hero characters. Just look at the Marvel streaming shows, and you’ll find plenty of examples of leads that start as ruffians and vagabonds that end up being the story's heart.
This is why we are glad Lucas gave up control to Disney. Say what you want about the multi-generation corporation, but you cannot deny they understand story. Here is a thief whose family was destroyed by the Empire that doesn’t want anything to do with the rebellion being a titular character in its very founding. This is precisely what Disney's innovators, storytellers, and dreamers are best known for - transporting us into a new reality out of the humblest of beginnings.
New and Familiar Faces
So far, we know Diego Luna will play Cassian Andor. He will be reprising his role from Rogue One, which you may want to go back and re-watch before the series premiere. To fill out the cast, we have Genevieve O’Reilly as senator Mon Mothma, Stellan Skarsgard as Luthen Rael, Adria Arjona as Kleya, and it s rumored Forest Whitaker will reprise his role as Saw Gerrera - the Clone Wars veteran.
The whole series is being overseen by the creator Anthony Gilroy (Bourne Trilogy, Michael Clayton, Rogue One) and, of course, the usual Disney haunts of Star Wars leadership. All in all, this is likely to be another rugged storyline that will fill out the rebellion and Empire a bit for Star Wars nerds like us and have plenty of thrills and explosions for fans around the world. That is why we are looking forward to the new Andor series.
Not to mention there are bound to be new lightsabers and weapons to use as inspiration for our store at SabersPro. We craft awesome lightsabers with neopixel technology that cosplayers, duelers, collectors, and Star Wars enthusiasts seek out daily.
Here’s to many more years of fantastic Star Wars series, movies, games, and comics!
